Project Title:     Construction of Mubende Community Orphans Training Centre Phase I.

Date:                   2nd – 16th May 2010

Project Host:     BOVCCU Mubende Community

Project Theme:   Supporting OVC’S to access quality education as a strong mean to fight HIV/AIDS.”

Project Location:

It’s located in central part of Ugandain village called Kayunga village Kitenga Sub County, Mubende district, and its 90km from Kampala(capital city) 2hours drive on Mubende road.

Project Background:

This project was started to promote and provide Basic Education services to the Orphans and the Community at large.

Project objectives:

Ø           To create a positive learning atmosphere for Orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC’S)

Ø           To promote community involvement in volunteer work/voluntary activities.

Ø           To sensitizes children and the general community about Prevention, Transmission and care for HIV/AIDS. 

Activities:

Ø           Digging foundation

Ø           Mixing sand and cement

Ø           Collecting bricks, mortar and water

Ø           Construction work

Ø           Home visits to HIV/AIDS affected families.

Ø           Interaction with children at the School orphans through sports, games, Singing and dancing.

Ø           Drawing and painting of pictures

Ø           Making playing material

Ø           Conduct community sensitization meetings on HIV/AIDS and active involvement in voluntary services. E.t.c

Cultural and Education Visits:

Ø           We shall visit Nakayima historical  tree

Ø           Climb Nakayima hill

Ø           Visit Mubende beach

Ø           Visit Tanda the historical holes

Note:

There is also the possibility of a group visit to Kasubi King’s tombs. This is a famous UNESCO declared cultural heritage site where the Baganda, the biggest tribe in Uganda buried and still bury their kings, the Uganda Museum, Entebbe Wild life Centre and Botanical beach gardens all found around Kampala, the Manshion Falls and other game parks but at the cost of interested volunteers.

Ø           A cultural night will be organised and participants will be expected to display items, songs and dances from there home countries and traditions. Please carry along anything that will introduce your culture and make this day enjoyable.

Expected Outcomes:

It is expected after the work camp:

Ø           A 3 classroom block will be Started (Phase I).

Ø           Pupils of Mubende Community Orphans Training Centre including orphans shall be counselled through interaction with the work camp participants

Ø           Reduced cases of Stigma and discrimination in HIV/AIDS orphans in the Community.

Beneficiaries:

Ø           OVCs and other pupils of Mubende Community Orphans Training Centre

Ø           Workcamp participants

Ø           Local community

Ø           The project members

Participation:

The project expects 15 participants maximum with a composition of people from other regions of Ugandaand International volunteer. Participants will work 6 hours daily from Monday to Friday. Saturdays and Sundays will mainly have interactive activities with the community and also free days for volunteers who would like to visit different places.

Who Qualifies to Participate?

Ø           Open minded, ready to interact with other people of different cultural background

Ø           Willing to share his/her experiences

Ø           Flexible to live/stay in simple life conditions

Ø           Flexible to the taste of other foods (local)

Ø           Ready to do heavy manual work on the project 

Ø           With Positive attitude, willing to interact easily.

Ø           Capacity to live without electricity, running water, and regular internet.

Ø           Ambition to help HIV/AIDS orphans and affected families

Ø           Willing to taste a variety of local foods and accommodation in a school classroom

Ø           No expertise/skills required

Note:

Ø           No special or particular expertise/skills required, however participants with skills in Psychosocial support and guidance, interactive games, handling children issues and Counselling stands an added advantage.

Host Community:

The people found in central Ugandaare multi tribal with majority of the population being Baganda .and the common language spoken is Luganda with big percentage of the population speaking English well.

Like most regions in  Ugandapeople in this community always welcome visitors , willing and interested to work/talk with people from different cultural back ground

Mostly you will associate with BOVCCU volunteers at the project and the community members.

Accommodation:

Ø           Accommodation will be at the project house

Ø           Participants will be required to carry their own sleeping bags and mats.

Ø           The camp site has temporary bathroom with no showers, latrines not toilets and simple cooking shelter (kitchen)

Ø           Participants are required to bring with them mosquito nets, working clothes, and working boots.

Ø           Any necessary games /pictures from home country bring them.

 

Meals:

There are several local food to choose from i.e. matooke, cassava, sweet potatoes, yams pumpkins, beans also rice, spaghetti, meat, fish, ground nuts and different types green vegetables.

Fruits can also be got from local markets i.e mangoes, sweet bananas 

Participants will choose food to prepare depending on availability.

Health Services:

There is a health centre at Kitenga Trading Centre 4km away, Mubende main hospital is located 20km from the camping site, in case for serious case its 2hours drive to Kampala.

Water Source:

Participants use a bicycle to collect water from the near by wells about 1- 2kms from the camp site.

Climate/Weather:

May is a month in the first rain season. It is usually wet and muddy. It is advisable to bring gum boots for easy walking through the mud. The temperatures are warm between 15 – 25 degrees centigrade and the evenings are at times a bit chilly. Rain is frequent.

What to Bring:    Sleeping bags, mat, mosquito nets, working gloves and boots.

 

 


Project Title:       A sanitation Project by Bright Orphaned and Vulnerable Children’s Centre, Uganda. (BOVCCU)

Project Host:       BOVCCU Bujuuko Community

Project Theme:    “Better Sanitation for Better Health”.

Project Location: Bujuuko- Wakiso District

Project Background:

BOVCCU is a Community Based Organisation in Wakiso District that was started up in 2004 to help creating better opportunities for orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) after a community consultation based on the over growing number of OVCs mainly due to HIV/AIDS. The workcamp project participants will also engage in promotion of primary health care and home hygiene in general.

Project Objectives:

Ø           To improve the living conditions of OVCs’ families in Bujuuko.

Ø           To reduce the vulnerability of OVCs from contracting preventable diseases.

Ø           To promote primary Health Care in homes of OVCs.

Ø           To promote community involvement in volunteer work/voluntary activities.

Activities:

The project activities include but not limited to;

Ø           Cleaning of water sources,

Ø           Construction of sanitary requirements e.g. Rubbish pits, utensil stands, bathroom (for families of old people taking care of OVCs).

Ø           Cleaning of Trading Centres.

Ø           Sanitation competitions.

Ø           Community sensitisation/mobilisation on sanitation and active involvement in voluntary services.

Cultural and Educational Visits:

During the work camp participants will visit Kyebando cultural tombs. This is a cultural heritage site where the Baganda, the biggest tribe inUgandaburied a king and others from the royal family.

 Note:

This camp is also in a location where there is the possibility of visiting Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO declared heritage site, Entebbe wild life Centre and Botanical beach gardens all found in a radius of not more than 40 kilometres from the camp site but at the cost of interested volunteers.

Cultural nights will be organised and participants will be expected to display items, songs and dances from there home countries and traditions. Please carry along anything that will introduce your culture and make this day enjoyable.

Expected Outcome:

It is expected after the work camp:

Ø           3 - 5 Water sources cleaned

Ø           2 Rubbish pits dug

Ø           10 drying lacks and bathrooms built

Ø           Bujuuko trading centre cleaned

Ø           Over 100 residents sensitised on sanitation issues.

Beneficiaries:

Ø           Families of old people caring for  OVCs in Bujuuko

Ø           Widows and widowers in Bujuuko community.
